These caves were carved in a large outcrop of dark basalt in the forest of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This ancient forest has long and rich history of preservation. The closest rim of this forest is 2 kilometres from caves. Path to the caves though is 5 km long - but it is well worth to walk it and to dive into the beauty of forest and expectation of historical gem to be learned. Kanheri caves are reached by impressive, long flight of steps cut in the slope of basalt.

The place is splendid, considering the integration of lush greens and rare artistic examples, but is surprising to learn that once it was a thriving trade route, and home to a Buddhist university, well known to the world. Majority of the caves are monasteries, intended for living, study and meditation. All of them have elaborately carved sculptures, relief's and pillars and encompass rock-cut stupas for worship.

There are about 34 unfinished paintings of Buddha within the caves. Apart from the paintings, one should also visit the 'Vihara' (prayer hall) and the different monasteries around the cave for a glimpse of former Buddhist occupation and life.

The hilly terrain of the caves also creates several, small waterfalls which are beautiful to see. Natural streams and rivers around the Kanheri Caves offer stunning views and beautiful locations for families to enjoy a small picnic while visiting the caves.
